Each year during the summer months of June July and August, some rather large fish migrate to the area around Isla Mujeres, Mexico. With plentiful food brings the docile giant whale sharks. Hundreds of these gentle giants migrate for the seasonal buffet of fish eggs and other microscopic animals for which they filter feed upon. Don't worry, whale sharks are harmless and humans are definately not on their menu. We often see dolphins, turtles and sometimes even giant mantas during this Ocean Safari.
Whale shark tourism is found in a handful of places around the world and the close proximity to Cancun makes this once in a lifetime activity available for visitors to Cozumel, Playa Del Carmen, Tulum, Cancun and Isla Mujeres.
Only licensed operators from Holbox and Isla Mujeres are allowed to conduct the whale shark tours. Permits are normally issued from May 15 to September 17 each year. Most operators however make a start date of June 1.
The whale shark tour is easily done if you are staying on the mainland with pickup at your hotel or resort in the morning ( Playa Del Carmen to Cancun). If you are staying on Cozumel, then we have to take a 7am ferry ( Accompanied by Blue H2o Guide) and have transport van in Playa waiting to take us direct to Cancun marina where our boats are. If you purchase a whale shark tour from a middleman they have you go to Playa and then you have to search for their contact there which is very confusing and sometime no show so you are left alone.
Blue h2o does not leave with the early morning rush of boats out and prefers to leave a little later. The reason being there is up to 100 boats out early so it can be overwhelming for some people to see. Blue H2o prefers to go when there are less boats and people in the water so its a much better experience for all.
